Trail nr. 5: Kanomlja – the Valley of the Idrija Fault

Fish farm (Srednja Kanomlja)
In the middle of the Idrija hills between the Vojsko Plateau and the Krnice Ridge, in a large part of the fault zone of the famous Idrija Fault lies the Kanomlja Valley. It is spread out along the 14 km long road that winds from Spodnja Idrija to Oblakov Vrh. Here you can see the fault, which is still active today and was formed by the convergence of the Adriatic Microplate beneath the Eurasian Plate in Miocene.
Above the Kanomljica stream, the banks rise more or less steeply and feature forests and individual homesteads. Once a valley of farms, mills, sawmills and humorous stories, it was first mentioned in 1335, when the territory was given as a fief to a nobleman of Cividale del Friuli by the Patriarch of Aquileia.
The ever resourceful and friendly locals like to say that in Kanomlja they are “neighbours from hill to hill”. You will never forget their kindness and the richness of the natural and cultural heritage of the Kanomlja Valley.

A well-preserved homestead from the first half of the 20th century. In the past, Šturmajce was one of the largest farms in Kanomlja, covering a total of about 100 ha of mowing ground, fields, pastures and forests. - Mineral and fossil collection
In the immediate vicinity of the road to Vojsko (Gorenja Kanomlja 44) you can see one of the most beautiful collections of minerals, ores, fossils and rocks by an amateur collector, former Idrija miner Janez Klemenčič, who has collected them with great love for many years. The numerous cinnabar ores stand out in particular. - Pr’ Ivaniš Blacksmith
The Pr’ Ivaniš homestead (Gorenja Kanomlja 40) is located along the path leading to the Vojsko plateau. It features a preserved and still working blacksmith’s forge. - Beehive and honey garden
A new wooden beehive, decorated with beautiful beehive panels, stands close to the Klame Basins, by the road leading to Vojsko. By prior arrangement, apitherapy is also available.

Trail description
Reaching the starting point: From Logatec, drive towards Tolmin or vice versa. When you get to Spodnja Idrija, turn left (from Tolmin, turn right) in the direction of the valley and the village of Kanomlja or Oblakov Vrh. Continue for 5 km along the main road that runs along the Kanomljica River. When you reach the brown signpost pointing to the left towards Klavže, cross the bridge on the left side of the river and park a little further on, opposite the Pr’ Ribcah Inn.
Trail description: Continue straight ahead and cross the bridge above the spring at Šinkovec Saw, then continue to the first sharp left turn (under the apiary). To see the Klame Basins, take the forest path straight ahead at the turn and just 10 metres ahead you will see the Kanomljica River, where you can walk upstream along the beautiful water beds. You then return to the main asphalt road and continue past the cart with the sign Mineral and Fossil Collection. After walking for a few minutes, you will come to a right turn where you leave the main road and turn left onto the gravel road leading towards Klavže. You will soon reach a meadow which leads you past the farmhouse Pr’ Rvenu. The path then turns left in the woods and shortly afterwards you will see a ramp ahead of you, past which you follow the signs for Klavže. Continue past the mown meadow and after 1 km of walking you will arrive at the Kanomlja or Ovčjak Klavže. Then turn back in the direction you came from and after about 350 m you will see a forest road on your left, which rises quite steeply. When you reach the sign for Šturmajce, turn right and continue through the forest. The path leads you to Šturmajce homestead, where you can see a farmhouse with frescoes from the first half of the 20th century. The gravel road then starts to descend and joins the road leading to Vojsko and the Slovenija Partisan Printing Shop. At the crossroads, turn right and follow the road downhill for about 2 km, past the farms Pr’ Ivaniš (blacksmith’s) and Zaklavže (fruit drying). When you reach the turn-off for Klavže, follow the familiar asphalt road back to the starting point.
