Trail nr. 21: Kampare Trail
HIKING AND CYCLING TRAILS
The Črni Vrh Plateau is famous for winter sports, especially the Trnovo Marathon. Year round, it offers numerous possibilities to spend active time in nature and learn about the natural and cultural heritage of the area. On the north, it rises steeply above the Idrijca River Valley; on the South, it is surrounded by steep peaks that offer amazing views onto the Adriatic Sea and Mt. Triglav.
Kampare Trail is a hiking trail leading from Klobučani in Idrijski Log towards Pevc above the wild Lake. The trail is three metres wide and sometimes cut into pure rock, while it crosses the sinkholes with man-made embankments. It runs on the edge of Idrijski Log and therefore offers a few spots where you will enjoy in beautiful vistas of the Idrijca River Valley and the other bank.
There are a few misteries surrounding the trail which make it even more appealing. The experts disagree on when it was actually built. Testimonies say that, during Italian occupation in the 1920s or 1930s, a forest railway ran here.
The origin of its name is interesting, too. The Kampare Trail was named after Kampare, a forest administrator and supervisor of the rail tracks, who was born in the village of the same name at Lokavec, Ajdovščina. This trail is certainly worth your visit!
Reaching the starting point: From Ljubljana, drive towards Idrija. When you leave Godovič to take the winding road down the Zala Valley towards Idrija, you will notice the first cultivated meadow: on your right is the CGP company building, on your left, a timber storage. After the next turn, there is a crossroads: take a left turn towards Idrijska Bela. Once you cross the bridge, you will see an Idrija Geopark information board: turn left and continue on the wll-reinforced macadam road called “po Ključah”. At first, the road will wind up steeply, then gradually becomes less steep yet still ascends. After about 5 km, just before you reach Idrijski Log, you will see a barrier preventing access to the forest road under Pevc. Here, you park your car at the side of the road.
Trail description: Continue on foot on the forest road past the barrier. After a good kilometre, you will reach a crossroads where the road gradually turns into a path. Stay on the left path which will soon take you to the edge of rocks overhanging the Wild Lake. The path will mainly lead along the edge, but will take a few sharp turns past prominent exposed blocks of rock. In the last part, the trail will widen. When you reach a smaller crossroads, stay on the right path. After around 500 m, you will join the forest road connecting Idrijska Bela and Idrijski Log. This is where the trail ends. Take the same trail to return to the starting point.
