Trail nr. 18: Matuckar Trail
HIKING AND CYCLING TRAILS
The Črni Vrh Plateau is famous for winter sports, especially the Trnovo Marathon. Year round, it offers numerous possibilities to spend active time in nature and learn about the natural and cultural heritage of the area. On the north, it rises steeply above the Idrijca River Valley; on the South, it is surrounded by steep peaks that offer amazing views onto the Adriatic Sea and Mt. Triglav.
One of the numerous hiking and cycling trails of various difficulties that are available on the plateau is the Matuckar trail. It is an easy flat trail, appropriate for a family cycling trip, and can partly also be hiked. Going past homesteads, meadows, and chapels, it traverses the entire Zadlog Plateau.
You will learn how geological features influenced the typical Karst landscape and its natural elements; see the architecture typical for Zadlog; witness the life of the Zadlog people past and present; and learn about the life and work of Zadlog-born Dr Frančišek Lampe.
The trail offers a wonderful trip: breathe fresh air, listen to the birdsong, and chat with the locals!

From the direction of Nova Gorica, take the Vipava Valley road to Ajdovščina, then continue towards Col and Črni Vrh. In Črni Vrh, turn left at the crossroads towards Zadlog. After approximately 800 m, park at the Pr’ Mark farm parking lot.
Trail description: From the Pr’ Mark farm head towards Zadlog. After a short ascent, the Zadlog Plateau with its endless meadows opens before you. A guide peg equipped with a QR code (via which you can access web content on your mobile phone) will guide you to your right on the first crossroads. After 700 m, you will reach a crossroads and beyond the meadow you will see the remnants of the flax cave. Turn left onto a gravel road and continue until you reach a crossroads with an asphalt road where you turn right. The road will lead you past the once magnificent Ivanšek’s linden tree and the Ivanšek’s pool to the crossroads with the Zadlog–Idrijski Log road, where you turn left. After 400 m, turn right at the first crossroads and left at the second one: you will reach the main road going through Zadlog. After a good 300 m drive, a guide peg will again steer you to your right, past a farm and onto a gravel road. The road that winds between the fields and meadows will soon lead you to a chapel and soon after to Tominc homestead. In the crossroads, turn right in the direction of a sandpit, and along the road, you will see a memorial plaque for Dr Frančišek Lampe and, a little later, Lampe chapel, where you turn left. After 500 m, turn left onto a local road and follow it in the direction of Črni Vrh until you reach a signpost for Štefk sinkholes and Špičasti vrh. Here, turn right onto a gravel road and follow it until your reach and asphalt crossroads, where you turn left, and then, after a few meters only, right. Cycle past houses and onto the main road through Zadlog, where you continue right towards Črni Vrh. A few hundred meters before your starting point, the road forks right and goes uphill towards a quarry where the tectonic contact between two thrusts is visible to the eye. Return to the main road. If you cycle a few meters from the starting point, the Pr’ Mark farm, you can visit Ivan Rudolf’s War Museum (Črni Vrh 36).
