Trail nr. 4: Vojsko – the Highest Village of the Primorska Region
HIKING AND CYCLING TRAILS
Vojsko, the highest village of the Primorska Region, is a sparsely populated karst plateau in the Idrija Hills (belonging to the Alpine foothills).
A pleasant and relaxing world stretches over the steep slopes of the Kanomljica and Idrijca rivers, offering exceptional views all the way from Triglav to Snežnik.
The unspoilt high-altitude meadows are rich in flowers, offering the herb connoisseur a unique selection of medicinal plants. The heart and soul of the plateau are the friendly and hospitable locals. Every inch of the land is still cultivated today, and the people mainly focus on livestock breeding and forestry.
In winter, Vojsko turns into a winter paradise with beautiful cross-country skiing trails leading through the rugged landscape.
Reaching the starting point: From Ljubljana, first drive to Logatec and then continue towards Idrija. When you arrive to Idrija, leave the main road leading to Tolmin at the third traffic light and turn left towards the town centre, then continue driving towards Vojsko. After driving for about 14 km on a road that initially climbs quite steeply, you will reach the centre of the village of Vojsko and you can park next to the Church of St. Joseph.
Trail description: From the parking place, continue towards the centre of Vojsko, turning right at the first crossroad on the road that leads slightly downwards. Continue past the Alpski vrt apartment. Follow the road, which with a few short ascents and descents continues along the Vojsko plateau, in the direction of the Slovenija Partisan Printing Shop, and then, when the road towards the printing shop turns sharp right, continue in the direction of Hudournik and the partisan cemetery or burial site. The road continues along the Vojsko Plateau and after a while leads to a beautifully maintained partisan cemetery. Continue along the road past the last houses to where the signs for Hudournik point you slightly right onto a gently sloping track. The track first crosses a strip of woodland and then leads to a larger meadow, where it turns into a path. Continue along the path, which, in a few minutes, leads you across a grassy slope to the scenic and spacious Hudournik. Return along the same path to the turn-off for Hudournik, where you continue on the gravel road. After a kilometre or so, you reach a major crossroads, where you take a sharp left at the turn-off for Gačnik. The gravel road gradually descends and after about 3 kilometres you reach the homestead in Gačnik. At the crossroads there, turn right along the path that leads you to the waterfalls in Gačnik. At the first homestead, there is a clearly visible path leading to the waterfalls by a hayrack on your right. You return along the same path until you reach the crossroads at the homestead in Gačnik, where you continue straight on past the wetlands. The path gradually climbs back up towards the centre of Vojsko. You can either finish the trail at the starting point or continue on past St Joseph Church in the direction of the cross-country ski running centre and Mrzla Rupa. The asphalted path is flat at first and then starts to descend steeply towards Mrzla Rupa. When you reach the first major crossroads, where the path flattens out again, take the leftmost gravel path. After about five kilometres, you reach the crossroads with the main road to Vojsko again. There, turn left along the asphalted road back towards Vojsko and return to the starting point in the centre of the village.
