IDRIJA UNESCO GLOBAL GEOPARK
The interactive exhibition Written in Rocks uses various models, items, animations, and video presentations to present the story on how this region was formed. Families, individuals, groups and school groups are invited to take a tour or a guided tour into our geological past and learn about the interesting sights that can be visited in our region.
The Idrija Geopark Visitor Centre is a great starting point for exploring the Idrija region. The exhibition Written in Rocks presents all the interesting sights of the region and the staff at the Tourist Information Centre share all the necessary information to make the rest of your visit as easy and interesting as possible.
In addition to the geological past and processes that created our world, the exhibition Written in Rocks features rocks and fossils, the geopark’s flora and fauna, the karst world with its phenomena, the cultural heritage of Idrija, and its picturesque countryside. The exhibition is centered around the tectonic processes and the important role they played in forming this area with its famous mercury deposit. These processes – the most important being the Idrija Fault – had an important effect on nature, rocks, soil, landscape and consequently the history and way of life, even the character of the local population.
With this presentation of our area and the most important natural and cultural sights, we want to inspire visitors to continue their journey and explore the wonderful sights of the Idrija region – in the town, the countryside and in nature.
The exhibition Written in Rocks can be viewed VIRTUALLY.
A unique audio tour in the company of Scopoli, the famous 18th century natural scientist. The clips are available through a QR code (the card with the QR code can be bought at the information desk) and can be listened to on your mobile phone.
